E140:
Have you ever heard the saying “If Johnny jumped off a bridge would you do it too?” or felt pressure to have to do things just because your neighbor or someone from work had or did something? Of course we all get these feelings but today I speak to some things I’m noticing from how social media has blown this feeling out more than we’ve ever experienced and it’s happened so fast I don’t think we understand it in full yet. Social media where we all connect and live so much of our lives now has made a new version of keeping up with the joneses that isn’t healthy. I believe we now see mostly just the things want us to see or what to show and not nearly as much of the how it happened to truth behind it to provide the context we need. Let talk about ways social media is good but we can limit it’s power on our day. On this episode Dave talks through thoughts on this concept and brings in context, stories, and things that have and haven’t worked for him combatting this feeling.
In This Episode We Cover
- How mindset issues can stop creative
- How social media is affecting us
- Issues with content algorithms
- How the human mind has been created verses how fast we have changed our environments
- Limiting social media to control your day
- Keeping focus in the morning
- Saving time waste from social
- Versing yourself instead of others
- “How” it’s happening, fake indicators of success
Quotes
“Now it’s escalated, on every social media platform at all times we can see what they are up to. On social media we can post only what’s good in our lives all the time and keep all the bad hidden all the time.” - Host Dave Swillum
“We often don’t have time to know if what we are introducing into our lives and way of life is good or bad because it’s moving so fast.” - Host Dave Swillum
“That’s the hardest race to win, when you’re versing yourself. That’s something I’m much more interested in winning.” - Host Dave Swillum

Discussing and sharing new ways to address financial literacy in children and in schooling is a passion for me coming from a background where I really didn’t feel like I was taught anything about any of the tools that have become so pivotal to me over the past few years. Today I speak with co-founder Erik Neighbour of the app “Gaurdian Savings” aimed at helping kids work with parents to mange their savings and understand money in a real way at a young age in hopes they can make strong decisions earlier in their life growing up. We speak on the real delta between happiness and money and what isn’t needed for it. Discussions goin through Erik’s history living in 6 different countries and 3 continents growing up in many non-consumercentric environments to bring a fresh perspective to addressing this deeper thought. We touch on app creation, entrepreneurship, and much more.
In This Episode We Cover
- Moving around the world as a child
- What it is that makes them happy
- How money can make you happy but different than you think
- Poor spending habits in American culture

“I’ve seen people living in mud houses but they might be happier than you and I.” - Erik Neighbour
“ In places like Bolivia, there really weren’t too many places I could go to and crave that stuff. Living in a less consumer centric world. This thesis changed my outlook of how we educate kids.” - Erik Neighbour

E136:
Ever hear the story about the carpenter that doesn’t work on their own house or mechanic that doesn’t work on their own car? It happens with creatives too. I’ve worked on my own music for 8 to 10 years, a lot of which has been helpful for learning my trade with more experimental things in studio and crazy ideas and tricks. But, what I’ve learned from it is that I am much better as a musician and writer when I am only focusing on being that person in that moment. When I have a technical aspect coming in it doesn’t always serve my art. SO, I’ve had to drop my ego, get out of my comfort zone and hire other people that do the same things as I do to work on projects with me because collaboration can be an amazing thing. I’ve noticed that many amazing songs if not all generally have other writers, producers, engineers, and collaborators involved with their success. When it comes to achieving the best possible results I’ll always give new things a try. On this solo episode I deep dive into my experience through these phases and my findings. Let’s talk about how important collaboration is for the creative community. We are built for it.
In This Episode We Cover
- Working on the art you do for work for yourself
- Limitations on working on your own
- What blocks us from collaborating more?
- How money can change your passion
- How ego can play into your decisions right or wrong
- What happens to the creative when you can’t step out of it?
- Being an artist first
- Benefits of collaborating with others
- Speeding up the feedback loop
- Making decisions
- Bringing diversity into the project
Quotes
“ If you don’t take time to be creative for yourself, you will lose that drive and ambition. Keep a little piece for yourself you deserve that and started because of it” - Host Dave Swillum
“ It’s your project, you have the right to say where the line is, that’s the best part about it.” - Host Dave Swillum

We spend a lot of time talking about what jobs we don’t to do on this show so I thought it might be nice to mix things up and talk about some practical jobs that make a lot of sense to support creatives and entrepreneurs while they go after their passion. I KNOW we are all waking up from work and trying to do what we want to do but nothing is an overnight success and things take time. They take a lot less time when we have the right day job to support our schedules, family, health, and income and there are so many ways we now have access to than we did in the past. Today we speak to co-founder of Integrate Up ToriAnn Perkey about how she helps people who want to work online get hired by companies that want people who work online. She believes every person who wants to deserves the freedom and flexibility to build the life they want while working a job. We talk through being a stay at home mom and equality for women, creating and controlling your week, and choosing income generating actives that help you fulfill your purpose or build your purpose in the meantime.
In This Episode We Cover
- What jobs work best for creatives and entrepreneurs while they work on their passion?
- Creating flexibility in your day to day
- Home schooling your children
- Creating a business as a stay at home mom
- Taking action to put yourself in a position to be forced to take more action
- Giving women the ability to pursue their passion after they have children
- Saying no now doesn’t mean forever
- What can I do from home?
- What can I learn how to do or already have 80% of the skillsets?
- Control your week, control your day
- What are your income producing activities?
Quotes
“I can’t be the kind of mom I want to be and work full time. “ - ToriAnn Perkey
“Be a little naive of what you are diving into can sometimes be a good thing.” - ToriAnn Perkey
“Life is really big, just because you have to say no to something for awhile, doesn’t mean you have to say no to it forever. If you love it enough, life dishes you up opportunities all the time.” - ToriAnn Perkey
