No Means Why & How Do I?

E70: No Means Why & How

We all hear no everyday but it’s how we perceive that answer and response with actions that defines who achieves and who doesn’t. You can’t make a living doing that, you can’t get a loan for that, you can’t afford it, you can’t ever live that way……. When I hear no I am thinking about WHY they are saying it and HOW I will get around it to continue on my mission.

Let’s talk about the different and sometimes secret ways people say no to us in our creative living journeys. No and yes never mean what we think when we analyze why they are being said and how we can move forward.

In This Episode We Cover

  • No doesn’t mean no, ask why, figure out how
  • Friends and family judgement taken in
  • Network
  • Speaking with others that do what you do often
  • No and Yes are circumstantial, these are arbitrary
  • How can you do it? Why did someone or something say No?
  • The why is important
  • You will always hear no
  • Mentors aren’t always right
  • Good mentors challenge you but don’t stop you

Quotes

“ When someone says no it’s almost like an immediately how am I going to do this, like they didn't’ say anything. When someone builds a little damn in the river its going to pull off in different streams until it goes where it’s going to go, it’s going to go there.” - Host Dave Swillum

“ In real life we know that there are thousands and thousands of people doing it in real life, but if we don’t go out and meet any of them it feels like its a TV show and isn’t possible. We need to network.” - Host Dave Swillum

“You don’t need anything to start anything.” - Host Dave Swillum

What’s Your American Dream? Alternative Living As Your First Home W/ Dave Swillum

What’s Your American Dream? Alternative Living As Your First Home W/ Dave Swillum

July 14, 2020

E66: What’s Your American Dream? Alternative Living Starter Home W/ Dave Swillum

What is your American Dream? For many it feels like your first home but for even more it is the way they want to live their life in every aspect. In today’s time it isn’t that it is less enjoyable to own a home, it’s just that it can be challenging to own a traditional first home and NOT go down the path of working a 9 - 5 to keep up with the overhead. Many bail from their dream because their overhead keeps an uphill battle going forward and doesn’t provide the cover fire to get started.

I want to talk about what your true goal is, if it is to buy a single family home and you like your job then that’s great! Super obtainable. But if your goal is more than that in this episode I talk on ways to live alternatively or change the perception of what your “starter” home looks like to come up with ways to minimize overhead, invest in assets that generate income or give yourself the cover fire to open a business or focus on creative. This is from hearing conversations of friends buying after wanting to talk to myself 6 years ago about something no one told me. What is your dream and what are you doing about it? Do they align with getting it done or is it a short term win that could look like something else to become a catalyst toward your goal?

In This Episode We Cover

  • What is your American Dream?
  • What is the goal and what’s the actual goal?
  • Buying your first home
  • Killing your overhead
  • Alternative living and housing
  • What are you trying to do?
  • What does that look like every day?
  • Reverse engineer
  • Don’t build a mountain to climb

Quotes

“ My priority for me is my way of life and how long do I get to have it?”  - Host Dave Swillum

“ Don’t get distracted because it feels like the goal and it feels good for the mean time for jeopardizing something that could be a long term goal for you.” - Host Dave Swillum

“ The businesses that have the most leverage and the least overhead that they have to battle are the most likely to succeed for the longest, because you have time to react appropriately and not act through fear.” - Host Dave Swillum

Running Your First Marathon W/ Dave Swillum

Running Your First Marathon W/ Dave Swillum

June 30, 2020

E64:

This year I decided one of my 2020 goals was to run my first marathon. I scheduled the earliest one I could find in NH and booked it without knowing how I would train to get myself there never running more than 3 miles. COVID hit and canceled my marathon until next year but I wrote the goal this year. I decided to run it with my friend Nadine who has been helping me train from the beginning and we made it happen running from Portsmouth, NH to Wells, ME. We were pumped to raise about 2k for charities and was able to prove to myself that when I am passionate about a goal and set a date I will find out how it’s going to happen in the given amount of time no matter what.

I don’t think a marathon is for everyone and encourage you to find what that is for you. But I think everyone can benefit from training or working towards something that SEEMS impossible but once it’s set you figure out how it WILL happen. Let’s talk on E64

In This Episode We Cover

  • What is it like to train for a marathon?
  • How can training help me?
  • Year goals
  • Set a date, make it happen
  • Getting rid of bad energy
  • Mental health
  • Accountability
  • Trust your gut!
  • If you want it, you can have it, think therefore I am
  • Stretch goal
  • Give yourself the win

Quotes

“If I wrote something down as a goal, it’s happening.” - Dave Swillum

“Sometimes you have no idea how something is possible at all, but you have to actually know it’s going to happen. Not in a way where you doubt yourself saying it’s going to happen, but in a way where your gut trusts its possible even if you don’t know how yet.” - Dave Swillum

Wait How Many Creatives? Managing All Your Creative Paths W/ Laura Harper Lake of Creative Guts Podcast

June 16, 2020
E62:

Welcome back! This week is another podcast cross pollination! We speak with Laura Harper Lake of Artful Harper Studios and Creative Gut’s Podcast. After having the opportunity to be on Laura podcast I really wanted to grab some of their spirit and chatter to bring back here. Laura does MANY physical and digital art forms and music as well. She is as creative as they come. By day Laura works with businesses to help them design their websites and branding for a NH non-profit and by night she works to create in all other capacities under her own name and business.

Today we talk on doing multiple creatives and interests and what that means. We speak on the meaning behind having creative guts and needing to do what you are meant to do in those means. Lot’s of goodies in this episode for any creative looking to do what they love around the clock and maybe being too much like Laura in I doing 1 million things at once because you love to.

In This Episode We Cover
  • Jack of all trades, master of none?
  • Primary creative
  • Digital v Physical
  • In the moment v planned
  • Still putting yourself out there
  • Different creatives and common pieces
  • Best at the craft or best in general?
  • Side quests

Quotes

“ It’s scary being a creative and putting yourself out there.” - Laura Harper Lake

“The more we connect, the more peace there will be” - Laura Harper Lake

“ I don’t think that I’m the best audio engineer, I don’t think I’ll ever be, and the reason is because quite frankly I don’t think thats the point. If I’m the best audio engineer in the entire planet but I can’t relate or get the emotion out of an artist, or work with them to get the right thing then does it matter?” - Host Dave Swillum

Where Business & Creative Collides: How Bad Do YOU Want It & Why W/ Sean Giovanni of The Record Shop

Where Business & Creative Collides: How Bad Do YOU Want It & Why W/ Sean Giovanni of The Record Shop

June 9, 2020

E61:

Welcome back to the podcast! This week Dave connects with sonic story teller Sean Giovanni aka Giovanni aka Gio. Sean is the founder of The Record Shop in Nashville, TN and has worked with artists like John Legend, Big & Rich, Tim McGraw, Zakk Wylde, The Wallflowers, and Juicy J. If you aren’t an audio nerd like Dave no problem. The guys go deep into the intersection of business and creative and how to manage it.

Sean brings great info on managing a schedule, getting clear on your why and putting steps in to place to do it. We discuss not distracting while not ruling out opportunity and some of the goods and bads behind being a creative and how to make them work for you.

In This Episode We Cover

  • Making a living writing and recording music
  • Making decisions young
  • The process
  • The value of a relationship over just a network
  • Bring value, support each other
  • If there aren’t extra positions, it doesn’t mean there isn’t opportunity
  • Creatives Can do a lot, but SHOULD they do it all?
  • Don’t diversify just because you can
  • How bad do you want to be successful?

Quotes

“ The really great opportunities started to come when I was able to clearly articulate what it was that I intended for my career, what I was going after, and what my skill sets were. Initially when I was starting to apply for internships or jobs one of the big reasons why I didn’t get a lot of responses back was because I sent the same email to that studio manager that dozens did everyday.” - Sean Giovanni

“ We’re not supposed to be the person that’s just willing to do everything even though YOU SHOULD be willing to do everything, you don’t want to lead with that.” - Sean Giovanni

“Don’t follow the money and do things that are a revenue stream that you see opportunity for money in. Anyone in that headspace of an entrepreneur or creative has that ability to create new ways thats what we are good at but if you do it and follow it you may find yourself in a spot where it’s really hard to do the right things because your heart isn’t in it. If you go all in on what you love in a smart way there is a way to make money there and you will stay your authentic self in the space.” - Host Dave Swillum
